OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS:

We are currently seeking an experienced Head of Liability Underwriting to lead the launch of our next product line within the non-admitted Agricultural and Commercial Liability market. 

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

You will define and execute the technical underwriting framework for the product, spearhead a wholesale broker distribution strategy, and serve as ARU’s lead subject-matter expert across all aspects of the line of business. 

Designed to evolve, your role begins as a hands-on individual contributor role with full ownership, growing into a team leadership role as the portfolio grows. 

You will be both strategic and execution-oriented, building infrastructure, driving disciplined underwriting, and scaling a high-performing team.

Duties:

  • Use technical underwriting experience and product knowledge to contribute to ARU’s Commercial Liability launch, from risks specific to agricultural operations to adjacent commercial operations.
  • Grow the portfolio through transaction-level wholesale-broker interactions and a strong understanding of policyholder buying priorities, as well as continuous internal collaboration and coordination.
  • Analyze risk information to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.
  • Negotiate with brokers to bind deals on in-appetite business.
  • Ensure proper documentation of underwriting files and compliance with underwriting guidelines and any applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain updated awareness of industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
  • Provide world-class service to brokers and other internal/external stakeholders.
  • Facilitate regular communication and collaboration among Underwriting, Loss Control, and SureStead claims team, ensuring all three align and assess risk best. ​​​​​​​
  • Work as part of ARU’s senior leadership team on overall portfolio management, taking on special projects from time to time. ​​​​​​​
  • Build, lead, and coach a high-performing underwriting team as the portfolio grows. ​​​​​​​
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year college or university; preferably in Business, Economics, Risk Management, or a related field. An advanced degree, such as an MBA or JD, is an added benefit.
  • 7+ years of Liability underwriting experience, with specific experience in Agriculture or other related product lines.
  • Daily display of disciplined execution and an entrepreneurial mindset are top attributes for success.
  • Knowledge of managing profitable portfolios, including setting terms, conditions, and pricing necessary to maintain a competitive footing in the market while also driving underwriting discipline at an account level.
  • Understanding of profit and loss management for a liability line of business is critical, including knowledge around expense management, loss development, and the financial impact of operational efficiencies.
  • Professional designations, while not required, are highly desired.
  • Commitment and contribution to upholding our successful remote office environment.
